Poems

Welcome, and thank you for visiting. My poems are concerned with the joys and struggles of daily life, with the wonders of the natural world, with family, and with the passage of time. The poems draw upon my childhood, travel to faraway places, my life in Cambridge, MA and summers on a small island in Maine. My husband, our two adult children and our grandchildren appear throughout; they are the sun, moon and stars of my universe.

About Me

I grew up in San Francisco, and although I haven’t lived there for many years, Northern California will always be in my heart. The culmination of my California years was being part of the pioneer class at the University of California Santa Cruz, which was then a maverick start-up campus in the redwoods near Monterey Bay.  It was a magical time.

After attending the Harvard Graduate School of Design, my professional life has been in the world of architecture and urban planning, and I have worked in both public agencies and private firms in San Francisco and Cambridge, MA. My most recent position was Director of the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence, a national award for urban places.

My career in the design profession informs my poetry in many ways, particularly in its strong visual orientation. I have always been keenly interested in photography. My photos appear alongside the poems, sometimes with a direct connection to a particular poem, and sometimes as an image of a moment or place that carries significance for me.
